Crystal (Borax) Snowflakes

Ryan came home from school and begged to make these real snowflakes for his gingerbread house birthday party.

I was intrigued.

After a little Pinterest research we were on our way.

Things you will need:

  • pipe cleaners
  • Popsicle sticks (or pencils)
  • borax
  • water
  • wire, string or ornament hook
  • Twist the pipe cleaners to form a snowflake. Or leave as a long pipe cleaner to make an icicle instead.

You need to boil the water and add 2 cups of watex to approximately 1/2 to 2/3 cup of borax. Stir until dissolved. Pour mixture into a cup and be sure the entire pipe cleaner snowflake (or icicle) is submerged. Snowflake should not be touching bottom, sides or anything else.

Leave sitting overnight without bumping or touching the containers.

Remove from mixture and lay on a paper towel to dry. Once dry your snowflake will look like this!!

Adorable!! What a fun little holiday science experiment!!
