How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies

Every now and then we get an infestation of fruit flies in our house. We typically always have fresh fruit in bowls on the counter so I get why.

Knowing why doesn’t make it less annoying though.

I’m going to share a few tricks to getting rid of them that I’ve learned along the way…

First, our “bug “guy” told me they reproduce in the sink drain. Use a foaming (expanding) drain cleaner to kill what could be in there. Then, put a stopper or plug in the drain and keep it covered whenever its not in use. If they can’t get in there, they can’t reproduce in there.

Next, get rid of everything on your countertop. Close pantry doors. Keep all food away from the open parts of your kitchen.

Lastly, fill a glass 1/2 to 2/3 full with apple cider vinegar. From what I have read on the Internet and been told by friends, this is the only kind that will work. Then, put in two drops of dish soap and fill the rest of the glass with water to create the suds.

The fruit flies will be drawn to it and they will be gone for good (in combination with the other suggestions mentioned above). Or at least until next time…

You will be amazed how many little fruit flies you find in your cup in a matter of hours. I will spare you that photo, but trust me.. Yuck.

Happy hunting!

Please note that these are just suggestions and not guaranteed to get rid of fruit flies. I am not an exterminator and this is not a sponsored post. Just a friend helping out a friend 😉

  1. Yep all these tricks work. We got them bad one year thanks to a few onions that fell out of bag and rolled to the back of the pantry. Took a few days to get rid of them but we used all those tricks and yes they were gone!
