Goodbyes Are Never Easy

It’s been a rough week around here. If you have pets you will understand what we’ve been through. We’ve been stressed; we’ve been worried; we’ve had sleepless nights; and we’ve shed tears. Lots of tears.

Yesterday we had to put our little Milo down.

It broke our hearts. We haven’t even told the boys yet. I have no idea what we’ll say to them and how they’ll react or if they’ll understand it. They loved that cat of ours. Remember the love they showed on Milo’s Day?

The really unfortunate part of this whole situation is that it was just a random, freak accident. He wasn’t sick; he wasn’t old. It was just a crazy accident that happened one week ago.

Since we lost Lucy two years ago, Milo has been mainly an outdoor cat. He spends his days in the backyard soaking in the sun and playing with the neighbor cats. At night he comes into the house, but stays in the laundry room. He loves his little routine and runs out every morning to enjoy his day and comes to the door around bedtime ready to settle in for the evening.

Then last week he made a mistake. He tried to leap the 1-2 feet

from the washing machine to his cat tree house and missed. He got his leg wedged in the front loading washing machine door.

There was talk of amputation. Milo was sick and in pain. He became dehydrated. He didn’t eat; he didn’t drink; he didn’t go to the bathroom. He barely moved. It was the hardest few days ever.

The boys checked on him constantly. Delta was beside herself and followed me around the house all weekend.

It was the right decision. We know that. But it doesn’t make it any easier. We lost our Milo.

So yesterday we were sad. Today we’re sad. We’ll still be sad tomorrow. And for many days after that. He was such a sweet, sweet cat.

  5. Oh… I can absolutely relate!! We had to put our cat Lenny down in November (http://strandupdate.blogspot.com/2010/11/burned-out-and-sad.html). We told the kids that Lenny didn’t get better (they knew he was sick) and so we brought him to Kitty Heaven. We aren’t a religious family but I think that was a good way to talk about it. And we told them that even though he wasn’t here anymore, we could still talk to Lenny and blow him kisses. And I’m not going to lie- hearing the kids on their bedroom monitors talking to Lenny and saying they loved/missed him? Broke my heart. Absolutely devastating. And even now we get the “I miss Lenny” comments but it’s better. We also have a framed picture of Lenny and we put one on our Xmas tree- because we have ornaments that were memories of that year on our tree. Well, Lenny got his ornament last year. Good luck and hugs to you all.

  6. Aww. I am so sorry. 🙁 That is so hard. Praying for you all and the boys that they will understand.

  7. I wanted to cry when I read your post. How awful for you all. To lose a pet is hard, to have to make the decision you had to make, to help the pet not be in pain, such an impossible decision.

I would LOVE to hear from you!
