Family Traditions & Gingerbread Houses… Oh My!

What are your holiday family traditions?  Do you host your extended family at your house?  Do you bake a specific dessert every year?  Do you make a tree ornament each year?  What do you do to make the holidays special in your house?

When I was growing up, every year we would make a gingerbread house.  Every year my mom’s best friend, Clara would come over and we would bake and decorate all day long.  We would make gingerbread houses from scratch.  On the roof there would be red and green colored gumdrops placed over cookies.  On the doors and windows you would find licorice.  The doorknob would be a cinnamon imperial.  The fence would be made out of pretzel sticks and candy canes.

I looked forward to this day all year.  I loved that my mom and Clara would have Christmas music on all day, laughing and talking and sharing stories.  I loved that they had the best friendship and never ran out of things to say.  I loved being part of this.

And this year, I plan on making a gingerbread house and carrying on this tradition.  Unfortunately, my best friend lives one timezone and several states away and so we can’t carry on this tradition exactly, but I do plan on sharing this fun tradition with my boys.

This year I will make a traditional gingerbread house with the gumdrop roof and a candy cane fence, but I will also make a Swedish gingerbread house to honor my step grandma.

She talked about Sweden and her travels there and how she remembered driving down country roads with little houses.  This year, I will make a gingerbread house that she would have loved.  When I came across this house, I smiled.  I smiled remembering someone who I loved so much and was so special to me.

What family traditions do you have?  What will you be passing along to your children this year?
