The Camel Bit Mommy!

What?  Did that say a camel bit mommy?  Where in the world would we have ever encountered a camel?  Let alone one that could get close enough to bite mommy?

Wisconsin of course!

What?  Did that say Wisconsin?  Since when do camels live in Wisconsin?

Well let me explain…… While we were up north in the woods we took a little trip to Hayward, WI and visited Wilderness Walk.  At this outdoor zoo and recreation park, the animals are not behind glass cages with many feet between the fencing and the people.

Instead you can feed most of the animals!  The boys thought this was great fun.  And I have to admit that mommy and grandma were also enjoying feeding the animals.

Well, that is until the camel bit mommy!

Ok, so it was really a bite.  It was more of a nip.  And it really was my fault.  I was holding my hand out for the camel to eat from while being completely distracted by Owen trying to pick up the fallen seeds from the dirt.  I wasn’t paying attention to the hungry camel and it nipped me while trying to lick the seeds from my hand.  It didn’t hurt.  But it did startle me!

The goats were so gentle while eating from your hand though.  They were so playful and the boys absolutely loved to feed them through the fence, over the fence and up the bucket to the house.  Yes, there was a pully system set up so that you would put the food in the bucket at the bottom of the hill and hoist it up the rope to the top where there was a house perched up high.  The goats would patiently wait for the bucket to arrive and then stick their entire head into the bucket to eat the seed out of it.  The boys laughed so hard over this.  And yes, mommy and grandma did too!

There were also baby deer (fawns) running around which were the sweetest things ever.

A few ducks that Owen got a kick out of chasing. Watch both videos (each are less than 20 seconds). In the first one you will hear Owen call me “Ma. Ma. Ma. Ma. MA. MA!” It cracks me up because he says it over and over super fast and abrupt not giving me time to even respond to him. I love this kid. The second video you truly see how he’s chasing the ducks.

We saw a sign later that said “Do not chase the animals.”  Oops!  Too late.

There were black bears, llamas, sheep, chickens, deer, guinea pigs, kittens, bunnies, turtles and tigers too.  Yes, tigers.  Don’t ask me how they related to the other more “wilderness” animals that we came across, but indeed there were tigers. Amongst the other crazy mix of animals we encountered. Such a hodge podge of outdoors!

We panned for gold and found some.  And then lost it.  And then found some more.  And then lost it again.  But the lady was nice enough to still give the boys each a lollipop.  (We had to trade in our gold for a lollipop)

It was a busy day.  We were all exhausted when we left there.  I’m not sure who was more tired – mommy & grandma or Ryan & Owen! Aaaaahhhhh…. what a great vacation it was.  How I miss Wisconsin and wish we could visit more often!  Well, in the summertime that is.  You Wisconsiners can keep winter for yourselves….

  1. I love that zoo, perfect for the smaller kids. 🙂 Last time we were there we got a ton of rain and lighting as we raced away to our car, lol. The little guy looks like he was thrilled with the whole excursion!

It really was a great time. So fun to be back in my familiar surroundings doing the things I enjoyed doing as a child. Nothing has changed 🙂 I hope you continue to stay bite free! LOL!
