Gardening for the Bugs

I’ve taken up a new hobby.  Gardening for the bugs.  Yep – for the bugs!  We haven’t enjoyed anything from the garden in quite some time and now I know it’s because someone else has been enjoying it before we can get to it.

These bugs!

Or at least I think it’s because of these bugs.  Does anyone know what they are?  Does anyone know how to get rid of them?

The garden was doing great for the first half of the summer.  And then it got hot.  And I mean HOT!.  And we (meaning I) couldn’t keep up with the watering.  I would water daily and sometimes more, but it was quickly drying out from all the Atlanta heat.  Man has it been hot here.

We lost all of our peas.  Bummer.  This was our favorite vegetable in the garden!  We also lost our corn (fairly early on) and I pulled the beans out because they were tangled in everything.

And even while the garden was still producing cucumbers, tomatoes and green peppers, we weren’t eating any of them.  Every time I would go to the garden to pick them, the tomatoes would be half eaten and the peppers were hollowed out.  I had never seen a bug in the garden and we have a fence around it so bunnies and other little critters (like Delta and Milo) couldn’t get in either.

What was eating my garden?  I had given up and stopped watering it and was going to let it dry out.

Then I saw these yucky looking bugs and wondered if they might be the ones eating away at the vegetables?  I ran to Home Depot and bought some organic bug spray and came home to get rid of them.

No luck.  They are still in the garden after several sprays over the last week.

Anyone know what they are and how to get rid of them?  Anyone know if they are the ones doing the harm to the veggies?  If you can’t see them clearly in the photos above, how about this macro close-up photo of the little bugger?!

I bought more soil today to give the garden a fresh cover of dirt in hopes to hold the moisture better.  I also bought some lettuce plants to give the garden some new life.

Wish me luck.  I really need it at this point.

Such a bummer. They ate my garden too. I lost most everything and while the tomatoes are still growing, we haven’t been able to “eat” one in over 2 months. These darn bugs get them first. Hope they are enjoying my lovely garden. UGH!

  2. They look like katydid nymphs to me. I posted about similar looking insects a month or so ago. Not sure if they are eating your plants though. I had them in daylilies and other flowering plants and didn’t really see any damage.

It’s the only thing I’m catching on the plants. They will literally chew a whole into the tomatoes and peppers and hollow them out. I catch them INSIDE the veggie so it has to be them…. I think anyway…. how annoying.

  3. I don’t know what they are but we have little green ones around here. Sorry they’re being such pests. 🙁

Did you ever get your bug situation resolved? I haven’t. They are still eating away at all my lovely veggies.

  4. First off, not sure where your blog went in my blog reader and I’m almost positive that I added it when you changed your url, but when I looked it was gone, so I missed a bunch of your posts. 🙁 I’m going back now to read about your Midwest vacation…

Bugs, Ack! I was going to suggest spraying a solution of dish soap and water on them, but if your organic bug spray didn’t work I’d be surprised if the soap did. Bummer, especially because those tomatoes and peppers look really good otherwise! I’ve had bug issues this year too, really makes me mad that I work so hard to grow my own veggies then the BUGS eat the stuff. We are like the little red hen!!!

  5. I don’t know what those things are, but they are in my daughters’s garden too. They seemed to show up in hers about the same time yours did – when it got super hot. I’m going to post some pics on my blog tomorrow. I also will post a pic of what I found in one of my pepper plants. I’m afraid our gardens are done for now, but I’m so looking forward to fall!

I would LOVE to hear from you!
